Generous Alumna Surprises School by Including Harley in Her Will

Phyllis Bentley ’45

Phyllis Bentley ’45 always retained her deep love for The Harley School, despite spending decades in Massachusetts as a psychiatric clinician and instructor. Her Harley roots ran deep—many family members were alumni, and her father, Cogswell, married Harley founding mother Harriet Bentley. After retirement, Phyllis returned to Rochester and immersed herself in Harley life, volunteering in the school archives and relishing the memories she unearthed. Sadly, she passed away in November after a decline following a 2019 car accident.

Phyllis was a longtime Harley donor, and Karen Saludo, Harley’s Senior Associate Director of Development and Alumni Relations, feels privileged she got to know her. “Phyllis and I became close over 17 years,” says Saludo. “Her feisty spirit, curiosity, and rich sense of humor made her a joy to be around. She told us she preferred to support Harley while she was living, and we were surprised to learn that Phyllis included Harley in her will. It was completely unexpected.”

Saludo notes the importance of notifying organizations when arranging a planned gift. “When we know a donor’s intentions, we can better meet their wishes and plan for our future. Phyllis’ gift will benefit Harley’s students and honor her memory as a lifelong learner.”
